Chek Keng ¨ª®|

A regular reader of your column and a committed environmentalist , I would be like to bring to the public¡¦s attention a serious situation which they may not have noticed .

Chek Keng used to be a remote , beautiful and tranquil bay in Sai Kung , and providing excellent natural retreat for city dwellers in Hong Kong . Over the past few years , however , it has become heavily polluted . A lot of plastic bags and other unsightly rubbish have been dumped on the shore . There is a disgusting smell in the bay caused by the refuse .

Chek Keng illustrates the multitude of problems facing our natural environment , being ruined by greed and ignorance . The only response we have seen over the years from the Hong Kong Government has been empty words and broken promises .

Chek Keng is dying and , unless prompt action is taken to clear up the mess , it will be beyond saving . If we don¡¦t act now , our remaining areas of unspoilt land will end up being completely and unnecessarily destroyed .

Hong Kong people seem to be unaware that they are wasting one of their best resources ¡V the environment .
